Cyber Security Lifecycle as a holistic approach

PD Dr.-Ing. habil. Lars Schnieder as speaker at the 2nd Cyber Security Conference of the VDEI Academy

Increasing digitalization offers many opportunities and plenty of new challenges. One of these challenges is the protection of critical infrastructures against unauthorized access by third parties (cybersecurity). Rail vehicles as well as control and safety technology must be equally protected against manipulation. To effectively maintain security and operationally relevant functions, hardware and software must be at least state of the art. In the best case scenario, the rail industry is always one step ahead in its efforts to protect critical infrastructures against attacks. (Source: VDEI Academy)

Lars Schneider presented a holistic approach to the cyber security lifecycle in his lecture at the 2nd Cyber Security Symposium. Among other things, the participants were given a closer look at the various aspects of the holistic protection concept from the perspective of the operator, the manufacturer and the regulatory authority.

The exciting first day of the symposium with more than 55 participants was concluded with a panel discussion chaired by Dr.-Ing. Joachim Warlitz, Vice President of the Association of German Railway Engineers. In the course of the lively technical discussion, for example, the key issue for the rail industry was the balancing of interests between the operators' obligation to retrofit from stricter legal requirements for the protection of critical infrastructures and the protection of existing plants.
