The U5 as the first fully automatic underground line of the Wiener Linien

In the June edition of the magazine "Eisenbahntechnische Rundschau" Dr.-Ing. Lars Schnieder, among others, published an article about the equipment of the U5 line for a fully automatic operation.

"The U5 becomes the first fully automatic subway line of the Wiener Linien. The fully automatic system ensures stability and increases operational flexibility through short response times to changes in passenger volumes. The U5 will emerge from the existing branch of the U2 line from Karlsplatz to Rathaus, which will be extended to Frankhplatz in the first phase. The line extension connects further areas of Vienna to the underground and relieves other lines."

For several years, ESE GmbH has been closely involved in the signalling modernisation of the security technology of Wiener Linien via the client Siemens Mobility Österreich GmbH. In recent years, ESE validators have tested plant-specific configuration data for several interlockings on lines U1 and U4 and our experts have approved it for passenger operation.

On the basis of the proven cooperation, ESE Engineering und Software-Entwicklung GmbH is also closely involved in the U5 project in Vienna. The validators of the ESE test system-specific configuration data for the signalling subsystems of the U5 line. Based on this, our experts give the approval for the start of the test operation and, after its completion, the approval for the start of the passenger operation. In the process, approvals for various construction stages are considered until 2023 (including commissioning of the test track, construction status of the existing branch of the U5, final extension of the entire U5 line).
